Say it ain’t so. Say it ain’t so.
The white woman who accused 14-year old Emmett Till of “whistling” at her down in a small town town of Mississippi has recently revealed to an author looking for her that “she made up that story” (as stated in a Vanity Fair article). 56 years after the fact.
To recap, Emmett Till came from Chicago in 1955 to visit his uncle Mose Wright in the “segregated south”. Till came from the North, where racial segregation existed as well, but not as bad and prevalent in the “Jim Crow” South.
One day with a group of friends and family members at a nearby store, Till had a picture with him that included a white woman. The story goes that Till was then pressured to talk to the white woman inside the store since he was so bold. Till did just that, and long story short, word went around town about the incident…leading to Till abduction from the uncle’s house late at night…which eventually lead to his death.
Till was found, taken to Chicago in an “open casket funeral”, Jet Magazine took the photo and a generation of Blacks were riled up for a fight…just in the same matter the Trayvon Martin case riled up a new generation for a fight and lead to the creation of Black Lives Matter.
Unsurprisingly to no one, the 2 white guys who killed Till were found not guilty, and were free to go. They even got paid $4000 to “justify” their story to the press years later.
And the woman who caused all this now said she made it up.
